Combined sheriff-coroner offices can no longer rule on deaths in custody
In counties where the sheriff is also the coroner, the sheriff-coroner may not decide the cause and manner of an in-custody death. The county must contract with an independent coroner, a medical examiner's office or a private examiner separate from the sheriff.
