About Takes Effect
Takes Effect lists new laws and rules by the day they take effect, so you can see what changes and when without reading every bill.
Where the entries come from
- California: chaptered bills from California Legislative Information. A California law takes effect on January 1 of the year after it is signed unless it is an urgency law or says otherwise. When a law sets a later start date, we list that date.
- Federal: final rules from the Federal Register, with the effective date the agency published.
- Other states: enacted bills from Open States, listed once the effective date is known from the bill or the state's rules.
How the summaries are written
Each summary is a short, plain-English reading of the official summary or text, checked against the dates in the law. Summaries leave out detail and can be wrong. Every entry links to the official text, which is what counts.
Not legal advice
Plain-English summaries to help you find what changes and when. Not legal advice: read the official text, and ask a lawyer about your situation.
Updates
The calendar is rebuilt every week from the official sources. Last update: October 20, 2026.
